The name of Dollar cames from "thaler"  wich come from "thal" and means "valley" in german. Thaler  was a silver coin used at the XV century of identical size to the 1/8 Spanish.  "Thalers" became English dollar. The Spanish coin resembled by its size and its weight at the American dollar,  then the same name was given.
